The Lake at Lissara, Life Lived Well
Lissara lies just West of the Town of Lewisville on land originally forming the eastern bank of the Yadkin River. This amazing setting is rightfully named “Lissara”(Gaelic for “beautiful valley”). Comprised of two sections the neighborhood offers an appealing range of residential opportunities: The Lake at Lissara, with jewel-like centerpiece, Lake Lissara, and; The Estates at Lissara, ending on the banks of the Yadkin River. With quick access to US421 residents can be in downtown Winston-Salem in 15 minutes, yet the setting has an undeniable mountain lake persona.
Lissara Partners went to great lengths working with the natural beauty of the existing land; protecting the leafy canopies of existing trees that offer cool summer breezes and filter rainwater.
Private roads built to NCDOT – Hilly Standards eliminated grading of wide unsightly cuts and allowed most rainwater to run into soft, vegetated ditches where it slows and soaks into the groundwater. Low-pressure sewer, universally desired in environmentally sensitive areas, allowed sewer lines to run with roadways. Efficient timbering resulted in re-use of every part of almost every tree harvested. Thousands of tons of rocks and boulders were excavated on-site to use in constructing the dam and two bridges.
Nearly 9,000 feet of natural streams were restored or protected with perpetual conservation easements. Lake Lissara, 64-feet deep and 21-acres in size, is surrounded by three-miles of protected natural shoreline and draws a gorgeous green reflection from the composition of its deep granite valley. Combined with Lake Lissara and natural open-space there is a total of 56 acres of natural surroundings to enjoy.
The “Timberlake Lodge” is full of low-impact, natural and energy-efficient components. Six-inch thick insulated exterior walls, a geothermal heating and cooling system, mill-cut roof and ceiling timbers, natural stone fireplace, poplar-bark siding and decking and handrail materials harvested and milled in North Carolina highlight the list. A standing-seam metal roof runs natural rainwater back into the lake.
Lissara utilized low-impact street and lodge lighting to protect the night sky. Excessive lighting is widely known to negatively affect wildlife habits. Although Lissara lies only a short distance to more urban settings, the lake valley is surprisingly protected from urban “glow”. Lissara is a member of the International Dark-Sky Association and has adopted its lighting ordinance into architectural standards.
